Learning to Read: Bossy R (R Controlled Vowels)

Learning to Read

Mrs. Hayes teaches young learners to start reading! Now that students have mastered their letter sounds, they are ready to move on to digraphs. Mrs. Hayes teaches that when the r gets together with a vowel, it’s so bossy that it tells it to make a different sound, instead of saying their own individual letter sound. With a fun song and game your child will practice r-controlled vowels, or “the bossy r”, which include er, ir, ur, ar, and or. After practicing the bossy r, children will learn to blend them with other sounds to read words!
